Buy the Dip: 3 Red Days (S&P 500)Works

Rules, as taught

  • A red day is a day that closes lower than the day before.
  • After three red days in a row, buy at the close of the third.
  • Sell at the close of the first day that closes higher than the day before, or after five days, whichever comes first.
  • No stop loss and no profit target. Buy only, one trade at a time.
  • Tested on the S&P 500 daily chart.

Key result

It made money: 91 trades since 2019, 78.0% winners, profit factor (money won per $1 lost) 3.83, and it did even better on 2024-2026 data (6.446). But it is in the market only 8.3% of the time, so simply buying and holding made more.

Opening Gap FillBorderline

Rules, as taught

  • The gap is today's 9:30 New York open minus yesterday's 4pm close.
  • Fade every gap of 0.1% or more: sell after a gap up, buy after a gap down, at the open.
  • Target: the gap fills, meaning price returns to yesterday's close.
  • Stop: 30% of the 5-day average daily range from the entry.
  • Close any open trade at 4pm. Never hold overnight.
  • Tested on the Nasdaq 100 and the S&P 500.

Key result

As taught it barely made money on the Nasdaq (profit factor (money won per $1 lost) 1.071) and lost on the S&P 500 (0.971), over 3,196 trades. A tuned version made money on old and newer data, but it is fragile.

ICT Power of 3 (AMD)Doesn't work

Rules, as taught

  • Accumulation: the Asian range, from 7pm to midnight New York time.
  • Manipulation: after midnight, price sweeps one side of the range (a fake-out).
  • Entry: the first candle that closes back inside the range. Trade against the sweep at the next open.
  • Stop just beyond the sweep. Target the other end of the range.
  • One trade a day, closed by 4pm.
  • Tested on the euro 15-minute chart.

Key result

It broke even before costs (profit factor (money won per $1 lost) 1.011) and lost after costs (0.905), over 1,803 trades. The best variations on old data fell apart on 2024-2026 data.
